Why a Custom Remote Is Rarely the Right Answer
Most buyers who approach a manufacturer about a custom remote have a problem that a catalogue product already solves. The genuine reasons for going custom are specific: a receiver family nobody else supports, a housing that must fit a particular panel, a protocol that has to interoperate with an existing system, or a private-label programme where the branding itself is the point.
Everything else is better served by choosing the right existing reference. A custom tool is a year of development and a permanent supply dependency, for a problem a SKU list can solve.

When Custom Is the Right Answer
| Situation | Description | Route | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| A receiver family nobody else supports | The installed base uses a protocol or coding that is not in the catalogue | Custom is the only route | Most common valid reason |
| A housing that must fit a specific panel | Mechanical reference exists and the geometry is fixed | Tooling required | Usually driven by an OEM or a panel maker |
| Interoperability with an existing system | The remote must work inside a customer’s own control platform | Engineering plus certification | A real technical requirement, not a preference |
| Private label at scale | Your brand, your packaging, your barcode | Tooling, not engineering | The common commercial reason, and a legitimate one |
| Nothing specific | The catalogue already covers the requirement | Do not customise | A custom tool is a permanent dependency for a solved problem |
The Development Process
| Stage | What happens | Note | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feasibility | Can it be done, and is it worth doing | Receiver, band and code family identified | 1 week |
| Specification freeze | Everything the product must be, written down | Electronics, mechanics, markings, packaging | 1-2 weeks |
| Engineering | Schematic, layout, BOM | Your approval at each gate | 2-4 weeks |
| Tooling | Housing mould and any fixtures | Artwork approval, physical reference | 2-3 weeks |
| Certification | Assessment against the target market rules | Scope confirmed before testing | 4-8 weeks if new |
| Pilot run | First production batch plus samples | Your functional test in the real application | 2 weeks |
| Release | Batch traceability, packing, documents | Shipped with the goods | Ongoing |
What You Need to Provide at Each Stage
| Stage | What we need from you | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
| Feasibility | The receiver model, the band, the code family, and what “compatible” must mean here | 1 week |
| Specification | Button count and labels, housing reference, battery, and any mechanical reference | 1-2 weeks |
| Engineering | Approval of the schematic, the layout and the BOM | 2-4 weeks |
| Tooling | Artwork approval, and a physical reference if one exists | 2-3 weeks |
| Certification | Target market confirmed, and who holds the existing report | 4-8 weeks if a new assessment is needed |
| First production | Approved samples and a written specification freeze | 2-3 weeks |
The Two Things That Kill Custom Projects
Changing the specification after tooling. Every change after the tool is cut is expensive, because the change ripples through the tool, the fixtures, the test fixtures and the packaging. Freeze the specification before the first cut.
Certification scope. A variant that falls outside the scope of an existing test report means a new assessment, which is the longest lead-time item in the whole schedule and is entirely avoidable by choosing variants carefully.
