RF remote control range varies dramatically: from 30m in urban environments to 300m+ in open field. This article explains what factors affect range and how to extend it.
Open Field vs Urban Range
- Open field: 200-300m (no obstacles)
- Suburban: 100-200m (some buildings)
- Urban indoor: 30-50m (walls, doors, interference)
- Urban with metal structures: 10-20m (severe attenuation)
Factors That Reduce Range
- Walls (especially concrete, metal)
- Glass with metal coating (low-e)
- Steel doors and elevator shafts
- WiFi routers (especially 2.4 GHz)
- LED lights and dimmers
- Smart meters (Zigbee, LoRa)
- Other RF devices on similar frequencies
How to Extend Range
- Use external antenna on receiver
- Install repeater (for commercial applications)
- Choose 433 MHz over 315 MHz for longer range
- Avoid metal enclosures around receiver
- Use higher-gain antenna (3 dBi or 5 dBi)
- Mount receiver antenna vertically, clear of obstacles
