Identifying Code Technology
Determining if your remote is fixed-code or rolling-code is essential before buying a replacement or compatible clone. Here is how to identify.
Method 1: Check Model Number
Search “[remote model number] rolling code” or “[model] fixed code” in Google. Most manufacturer datasheets specify the technology.
Method 2: Look for FCC ID
US remotes have FCC ID (e.g., “FCC ID: HBW893MAX”). Search at fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid to find datasheet.
Method 3: Physical Indicators
- Older (pre-2005) remotes: usually fixed-code
- Modern brand remotes (LiftMaster 890MAX/893MAX/971LM): rolling-code
- European (Hormann/NICE/CAME post-2010): rolling-code
- Generic / OEM / Chinese: often fixed-code (easier to copy)
Method 4: Test with Universal Cloner
4-band universal cloner will only copy fixed-code remotes. If pairing fails repeatedly, your remote is rolling-code.
