Garage Door Remote Battery & Range Troubleshooting: What Installers Check First

The First Five Checks

Most “my remote stopped working” calls are not remote failures. In order, an installer checks: battery voltage under load rather than at rest, button pad contact, antenna connection at the receiver, interference from a newly installed LED lamp or dimmer, and range under load with the door partially open. Only after those does a replacement handset enter the conversation.

Battery: the Number One Cause

A 9V battery that reads fine on a meter can still fail under the transmit current. The test that matters is voltage measured while the button is held. A fresh alkaline cell typically holds noticeably higher than a cell that reads acceptable at rest. Rechargeable 9V cells are a recurring source of the same complaint because their voltage sags under load.

Range: Test It Properly

Range claims are meaningless without conditions. A handset tested with the door fully open, from the driveway, at midday, on a fresh battery, tells you nothing about a handheld used at a side door in the evening. When a buyer evaluates a sample, the useful test is the worst case in their market: door partially open, worst weather, end of battery life.

Interference, and the LED Problem

New LED lamp drivers and dimmers are the most common new cause of intermittent remote failure in a previously working installation. The symptom is a remote that works from close to the door and fails from the car. It is frequently misdiagnosed as a weak battery, and a replacement handset will not fix it.
