What a Duplicator Actually Does
A multi-band duplicator captures the signal from an existing remote and replays it. That single function determines everything about how it is sold: it works on fixed-code systems, and it does not work on rolling-code systems, because a rolling-code receiver rejects a replayed signal by design.
So the commercial question is never “which duplicator is best”. It is which fixed-code systems does this van actually meet, and how wide a band range covers them.

Band Coverage That Matters in Locksmith Work
| Band | Market | Locksmith relevance |
|---|---|---|
| 280-315MHz | North America, legacy fixed-code | Common on older garage and gate systems |
| 330-350MHz | Certain European markets | Niche but persistent installed base |
| 365-390MHz | North America, mid-range | Common on 1990s-2000s systems |
| 433-868MHz | Europe, Australia | Rolling code dominant here; fixed-code still present |
4-Band vs 8-Band: How to Decide
| Your demand | Format to stock | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| North American van, general residential | 4-band, deep stock | Covers the majority of fixed-code installed base |
| European van, general residential | 4-band, deep stock | Availability matters more than band count |
| Mixed market, older vehicle parc | 4-band, deep stock | Legacy bands are where the copy jobs are |
| Van meeting niche low or high band systems | 8-band | Only if that band is material to your volume |
The Feature That Decides More Than Band Count
Fixed-code family coverage, not band count. A unit that lists four bands but pairs with only two of the common fixed-code families is a return generator, and the return happens on the customer’s driveway rather than in your warehouse. Ask for the family list, then test the sample against the oldest remote in your market rather than the newest.
What to Verify Before Ordering a Batch
- The fixed-code families actually supported, listed explicitly rather than described as “universal”.
- Roll-up car key format, if your market uses it — not every duplicator includes the case.
- Learning mode behaviour, because a technician needs it to work without a bench.
- Certification for the destination market: FCC Part 15 for North America, CE-RED and RoHS for the EU, RCM for Australia.
