Coil Voltage Follows the Control Supply, Not the Load
This is the single most consequential specification in a contactor order, and the most frequently assumed. The coil voltage is determined by the control circuit that energises the contactor, not by the load it switches. A contactor switching a 400V three-phase motor may have a 24VDC coil, because the control panel runs on 24V.
Getting it wrong is not a subtle fault. A 24VDC coil on a 230V supply will not pull in; a 230VAC coil on a 24V supply will hum and overheat.

Coil Voltage Families
| Coil | Where it is used | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 24VDC | PLC-driven control panels, 24V control supply | Holds with sustained current; check hold-up on power dip |
| 42V / 48V | Legacy and specialised control systems | Confirm whether the supply is AC or DC |
| 110V AC | North America, legacy UK installations | Often dual-frequency 50/60Hz |
| 220V / 230V AC | European single-phase control panels | 230V50Hz and 240V60Hz are not interchangeable |
| 240V AC | North America | 60Hz supply |
| 400V / 415V AC | Three-phase panels, 50Hz markets | Follows the control supply, not the load |
| 500V / 600V AC | Heavy industrial, older systems | Specify frequency explicitly |
DC vs AC Coil: The Difference That Costs Commissioning Time
A DC-coil contactor holds its contact closed with a sustained current draw, which means it consumes power continuously — typically two to four watts, which sounds trivial until a panel carries forty contactors. An AC coil draws power only on pull-in and then holds on a much smaller sustaining current, but it has a larger drop-out voltage: it releases later during a power dip than a DC coil does.
The practical consequence is that a panel designed around AC coils may behave differently during a brownout than the original design intended. If the installation has had unexplained contactor releases, the coil type is a variable worth checking before the contactor is blamed.
Common Errors in Coil Specification
- 230V specified when the panel runs 220V or 240V. These are frequently not interchangeable across 50Hz and 60Hz markets.
- 400V coil on a 415V control supply. Common when the panel was copied from a drawing rather than measured.
- 24VDC specified where a 24VAC control exists. The two are not interchangeable.
- Coil voltage confused with the load voltage in the ordering code. Send the ordering code and let the manufacturer decode it rather than guessing.

Compatibility and IP Position
Eaton and DILM are trademarks of Eaton Corporation plc. Our compatible contactors are independently engineered replacements using our own design and our own tooling, matched to the published frame size, current rating, terminal layout and coil options of the DILM family. We are not an authorised Eaton distributor, we do not apply Eaton branding to our goods, and no Eaton trademark or patent is reproduced on our product. Where a project specification requires an authorised-channel part, that part must come from Eaton.
Catalogue references for the specification above: RF Mando compatible DILM32-XTED11-1 (RA24) contactor and RF Mando compatible DIL4M115 (400V50HZ, 440V60HZ) contactor. All are MOQ 100 pcs per SKU, 7-15 day lead time, one free sample per SKU, and supplied on our own PCBA and housing tooling with AQL 5% inspection available.
