Three Ways Into a Car-Park Barrier
Entry to a car park happens in one of three ways: a ticket dispenser and barrier, licence-plate recognition with no barrier at all, or a remote-controlled barrier for a private or permit-controlled site. The hardware looks similar in all three cases, and the control requirements are entirely different.

Comparison
| Parameter | Ticket system | ANPR | Remote-controlled barrier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry method | Ticket dispenser and barrier | ANPR camera, often no barrier | Remote-controlled barrier |
| Primary control | Ticket machine and keypad | Automatic plate match | Rolling-code remote or keypad |
| Remote role | Manned override and maintenance access | Maintenance override only | Primary means of opening |
| Remote volume | High, consumable | Low, service item | Moderate, repeat replacement |
| Typical site | Public multi-storey car park | Staff and permit car park | Residential permit car park |
Where Remote Controls Sit in All Three
Even in an ANPR system, a remote remains useful: barrier override for maintenance, resident access, and the manual release the technician uses during a fault. For a permit-controlled site with a manned barrier, the remote is the primary means of opening and the ticket system is the exception path.
For a distributor, this means the remote requirement does not disappear when the site installs ANPR. It changes role, and it changes from a high-volume consumable to a lower-volume service item — which is worth stating plainly rather than assuming the site needs nothing.
What to Specify for a Quotation
- Barrier type and boom length, with the cycle frequency on a car park.
- Control position, because the cabinet location affects cabling more than the unit price.
- Whether remote access is primary or override, which decides the channel count and the handset format.
- Backup power requirement, and what the barrier should do on power loss.
