Two Standards, Two Different Questions
EN 12453 and EN 12978 are frequently quoted together and answer different questions. EN 12453 covers the safety of power-operated gates, barriers and doors for use by persons, and it deals with crushing, shearing and trapping hazards to people. EN 12978 covers power-operated pedestrian gates for use on escape routes, where the additional requirement is that the gate must release on power failure in the escape direction.

What Each Standard Requires
| Standard | Covers | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| EN 12453 | Safety of power-operated gates, barriers and doors for use by persons | Crushing, shearing and trapping hazards to people |
| EN 12978 | Power-operated pedestrian gates for use on escape routes | Additional requirement: release on power failure in the escape direction |
| EN 60204-1 | Electrical equipment of machines | Applies where the gate is part of a machine installation |
The Safety Devices Buyers Actually Specify
| Device | Protects against | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Safety edge (contact) | Crushing on a moving leading edge | Sliding and swing gates |
| Photoelectric beam | Closing onto an obstruction | All gate types |
| Force-sensitive edge | Residual crushing force | Where a beam is not practicable |
| Encoder / obstacle detection | Closing force above the limit | Drives with integrated detection |
| Manual release | Loss of power / egress | Escape routes, pedestrian gates |
The Specification Point Buyers Get Wrong
The requirement is about the force limit on the gate, not about the presence of a device. A safety edge that is installed but never tested against the force limit does not satisfy the standard, and a drive whose obstacle-detection sensitivity is set too low will reverse on normal operation resistance rather than on a real obstruction. Both are commissioning issues, which is why the commissioning sheet carries as much compliance weight as the product.
