The Specifications Nobody Quotes Are the Ones That Fail
When two quotes arrive for the same product at different prices, the visible specifications — rating, voltage, dimensions — are usually identical. The difference that shows up eighteen months later is in the specifications nobody put on the quotation: capacitor grade, contact plating, transistor grade, housing material, and the tolerance of the frequency reference.
This page sets out what to ask about, in the specific language a buyer can use.

What to Ask, Product by Product
| Specification | Applies to | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contact plating | Contactors, aux contacts, relay contacts | What it is plated with, and how thick | Determines wear life on high-cycle loads |
| Capacitor grade | PSUs, decoders, control boards | Temperature rating and brand | The usual cause of units failing warm |
| Transistor grade | Transmit path on RF products | Part number, not just function | Drives transmit power and stability |
| Reference oscillator | RF carriers | Part number and tolerance | Causes intermittent range failures |
| Housing material | Remotes, shells, contactor casings | ABS vs PC/ABS vs silicone | Drives impact and UV resistance |
| Coil insulation class | Contactor coils | Class B vs F | Determines thermal margin |
Why Contact Plating Matters More Than Contact Rating
A contact rated for the right current can still fail early if it is plated lightly, because the plating wears before the underlying contact does. On a contactor switching a motor load once an hour, the wear is negligible. On one switching a heating load dozens of times a day, it is not. Ask what the contact is plated with and how thick.
Why the Frequency Reference Matters More Than It Sounds
An RF remote’s carrier stability is set by its reference oscillator. A cheap reference drifts with temperature, and the drift shows up as a remote that works in the morning and fails in the afternoon, or works indoors and not outdoors. On a product whose entire function is a rolling-code handshake, a marginal oscillator produces a fault that looks like a protocol problem and gets diagnosed as one.
Ask for the reference oscillator specification. It is the least glamorous line on the datasheet and the one most likely to explain an intermittent failure report.
The Test That Reveals the Difference
Order one sample from each supplier. Test them in the worst case in your market: door partially open, end of battery life, temperature extreme, worst weather. A product that fails only in the workshop will fail in the field.
