CE marking is the single most misunderstood cost item in importing electrical products into the European Union. Buyers either overestimate it and avoid the market, or underestimate it and discover at customs that the documentation does not cover their variant. Both are avoidable.
What CE-RED Actually Covers

Cost and Timeline
For a passive component with an existing family report, the incremental cost of extending the documentation to your variant is modest. For an active radio product with no prior family report, a full conformity assessment including testing is a four-to-eight-week process and a cost that varies widely by laboratory and by how many variants need covering.
The single biggest cost mistake is specifying a product, then changing the variant after the report is issued. A coil voltage change or a band change can put the product outside the scope of the report, and the assessment has to be redone.
The Practical Sequence
- Freeze the specification before testing. Frame, coil voltage, frequency, housing variant, packaging.
- Ask the laboratory what the scope of the report will cover and whether your planned variants fall inside it.
- Build the certification into the development schedule, not after it. It is not an afterthought step.
- Ship the reports with the batch. Not on request after the container has sailed.
The Model-Number Check
Verify that the model number printed on the test report matches the model number on your purchase order and on the carton. This is a thirty-second check that prevents the majority of customs questions in this category.
