Why the Motor Is the Hard Part of a Shutter Job
Measuring a shutter is quick. Sizing the motor correctly is not, because the torque requirement scales with shutter area, tube diameter and fabric weight, and an undersized motor shows up as a slow-running curtain that strains at the bottom of travel. Installers who get this wrong return to the site; installers who get it right do not.
That is the argument for buying the motor from a supplier who will size it with you rather than sell you the catalogue default.

Motor Sizing: The Three Numbers We Need
| Input | Typical range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Shutter width & height | Overall curtain area | Sets the baseline load |
| Tube diameter | Usually 42mm, 60mm or 70mm | Larger drum reduces required torque at the curtain |
| Fabric weight | kg/m², including any insulation | Laminated and blackout fabric adds mass the area figure misses |
| Cycles per day | Domestic: 2-6; shopfront: 10-30 | Sets the duty cycle the gearbox is rated for |
What You Get in the Kit
| Component | Options | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tubular motor | 10Nm to 60Nm, 433MHz or 868MHz radio | Sized to the shutter, not to a default |
| End limits | Mechanical switch, or encoder-assisted | Encoder preferred where torque varies with fabric |
| Remote control | 1 / 3 / 5 / 16-channel, LCD or keyfob | Channel count should match the installation |
| Wall transmitter | Optional, where the site has no handheld | Common in hotel and commercial projects |
| Key switch | Optional, for manual override | Needed where local fire or access rules require it |
Where Installers Get Burned
- Buying on shutter area alone. A wide shutter with a thin tube has a lower torque requirement than a narrow shutter with a heavy tube, because the drum diameter changes the mechanical advantage.
- Ignoring the fabric. Laminated insulation and blackout fabric add weight that the area calculation does not capture.
- Specifying a motor without end limits. A motor that cannot be mechanically limited is a motor that will eventually be over-adjusted and fail the drum.
- Forgetting the control. A motor shipped without the matching remote, wall transmitter and end-switch kit is not a complete part.

What to Verify Before Ordering
- A written motor recommendation with the three input numbers stated, not a guess.
- End-limit and encoder options included, or quoted as separate SKUs — know which.
- The control package is in the order, not deferred to a second shipment.
- Batch date codes and a carton-level packing list, so a mixed order arrives correctly sorted.
