The Complaint Every RTS Supplier Receives
“It will not program.” On an installed shutter that has already worked, this is almost never a failed handset. In order of frequency it is a reset receiver, a power interruption during learning, a multi-remote limit on the receiver, or a battery that reads acceptable at rest and fails under the transmit current.

Diagnose Before You Replace
| Cause | Frequency | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Receiver memory full | Most common | Delete an unused remote, then re-learn |
| Power interrupted during learning | Common | Power the shutter, learn in one uninterrupted sequence |
| Battery fails under load | Very common | Measure voltage while the button is held; replace with alkaline |
| Reset receiver | Occasional | Power cycle the shutter to restore factory state |
| Wrong code system | Rare | A fixed-code unit will not learn into an RTS receiver |
The Multi-Remote Limit, and Why It Causes Returns
Most RTS receivers hold a fixed number of programmed remotes — commonly somewhere between four and twenty, depending on the receiver generation. Once the memory is full, a new handset will not learn and the installer concludes the product is defective. The fix is to delete an unused remote from the receiver, not to replace the handset.
Before dispatching a replacement, ask the installer to count the remotes already programmed into the receiver. A full receiver is the single most common cause of a handset that “does not work” on an installation that worked last week.
Battery, Correctly Tested
A 9V cell that reads 9.1V on a meter with nothing connected can drop below the transmit threshold the moment a button is held. The test that matters is voltage measured across the terminals while the transmit button is down. Rechargeable 9V cells are the recurring culprit because their resting voltage looks fine and their loaded voltage does not.
What to Verify When Ordering Replacements
- Rolling-code implementation, not a fixed-code unit dressed as a replacement — it will be rejected outright.
- Band matching the market: 433.42MHz for RTS.
- Button numbering identical to the incumbent so the customer needs no retraining.
- Certification for the destination market — CE-RED and RoHS for the EU, RCM for Australia.
