Throughput Is a Design Constraint, Not a Feature
A tripod turnstile, a speed gate and a barrier serve the same purpose at the boundary of a site, and they differ mainly in throughput and in what they physically prevent. A turnstile prevents tailgating by requiring one body through at a time. A speed gate does not; it counts bodies with sensors. Choosing between them is a decision about what the site is actually trying to achieve.

Configuration Comparison
| Parameter | Ticket system | ANPR | Remote-controlled barrier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry method | Ticket dispenser and barrier | ANPR camera, often no barrier | Remote-controlled barrier |
| Primary control | Ticket machine and keypad | Automatic plate match | Rolling-code remote or keypad |
| Remote role | Manned override and maintenance access | Maintenance override only | Primary means of opening |
| Remote volume | High, consumable | Low, service item | Moderate, repeat replacement |
| Typical site | Public multi-storey car park | Staff and permit car park | Residential permit car park |
The Failure Mode Nobody Plans For
A turnstile installed in a fire-egress route without a compliant free-swing or break-glass arrangement is a specification error that surfaces at inspection, not at installation. The same applies to a speed gate in an accessible route: accessibility requirements frequently mean a wider lane or an adjacent accessible gate, which changes the layout rather than the product.
What to Specify for a Quotation
- Lane count and clear width, which determines throughput and floor area.
- Direction of travel, because one-way and two-way configurations use different mechanisms.
- Power and control position, because the control cabinet location affects cabling cost more than the unit price.
- Egress and accessibility requirements, stated explicitly in the enquiry rather than assumed.
We supply the matching rolling-code remotes and the wall-mounted handsets for manned positions, in the same shipment as the lane hardware.
