Three Numbers Decide the Operator
A barrier operator is specified by boom length, barrier weight and cycle frequency. Quoting on boom length alone is the most common way to under-size an installation: a long boom in a windy site, or a long boom on a busy car park, needs a different duty rating from the same boom length on a quiet residential drive.

The Three Numbers
| Input | What to send | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Boom length | The clear opening in metres | Determines the boom profile and the drive class |
| Barrier weight | Total moving mass including boom, skirt and LED strip | Determines thrust and gearbox size |
| Cycles per day | Average and peak-hour figure | Determines duty rating; this is the number most often quoted without a period |
| Wind exposure | Open or sheltered site | Changes the boom profile recommendation |
Why Cycle Frequency Changes Everything
A residential barrier running twenty cycles a day and a car-park barrier running eight hundred are the same mechanical class of product and a different duty class entirely. Cycle frequency determines gearbox wear, arm fatigue and, on a site with a tail-lift or a low-clearance van in the traffic mix, whether the boom needs a reinforced profile.
Ask for cycles per day, not cycles per hour. A busy airport car park figure quoted as “200 cycles” without a period attached is not a specification.
What to Send for a Written Recommendation
- Boom length and barrier weight, including any skirt or LED strip.
- Cycles per day and the peak-hour rate.
- Wind exposure, because it changes the boom profile recommendation.
- Power supply at the site and whether a backup is required.
We reply with the operator model, the control package, and a written confirmation of what is in stock.
