Channel Count Is a Site Decision, Not a Product Decision
A one-channel handset for a single gate is correct and cheap. A four-channel handset on the same site is correct if the site has a second gate, a barrier and a lighting group sharing one control panel. The buyer who orders four channels “to be safe” ends up handing an end user a handset with three buttons that do nothing, and the handset stops being used.

Channel Configurations and Their Use
| Channels | Site situation | Format |
|---|---|---|
| 1 channel | Single gate or barrier | Handheld keyfob, lowest cost |
| 2 channels | Gate plus a second barrier sharing a panel | Handheld or wall handset |
| 4 channels | Gate, barrier, pedestrian gate and lighting group | The most common commercial configuration |
| Wall handset | Manned position, gate post without a handheld | Fixed installation, matched to the panel |
Rolling Code and Why It Changes the Supply Chain
A rolling-code remote transmits a new value after every press and the receiver rejects a repeat. That is why a rolling-code handset is an original-style product rather than a copy: a copy of a rolling code is rejected by design, and the aftermarket for rolling-code handsets is manufactured to the protocol rather than captured from another handset.
For a distributor, this means the rolling-code range is not a trading decision. It is a manufacturing and testing commitment, which is also why the price difference between a rolling-code handset and a fixed-code copy remote is real rather than a margin artefact.
What to Verify Before Ordering
- Coding family match against the control box, not the handset brand. The same brand name ships different coding families in different markets.
- Rolling code, not fixed code. Never substitute across that boundary.
- Channel count matched to the site, and button numbering identical to the incumbent.
- Receiver range in the actual install position, tested at the gate post rather than at the control box.
