Why Remote Imports Get Held
Garage-door remotes are small, cheap and radio-transmitting, which is exactly the profile that customs and radio regulators look at closely. A shipment can be held not because the product is unsafe but because the documentation does not cover the variant that is actually in the carton.

The Checklist
| Item | What to confirm | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Band allocation confirmed | Market, not brand name | Prevents the most common hold |
| Certification scope | Report model number matches the order | A report for another variant does not cover yours |
| Certificate holder | Manufacturer, not intermediary | Ask who holds it |
| HS classification | Your broker’s written opinion | Not the supplier’s guess |
| Battery content | Checked against the destination schedule | Lithium content can trigger extra requirements |
| Labelling | Language and markings for the market | Re-labelling costs more than getting it right |
| Document retention | Filed against the order number | Answers a field query two years later |
The Two Checks That Prevent Most Problems
Model number on the test report versus model number on the purchase order. Thirty seconds of checking, and it prevents the majority of holds. The report is issued for a specific model and a specific band; a variant outside that scope is outside the report, no matter how similar it looks.
Certification held by the manufacturer rather than by an intermediary. Ask who holds it. A supplier who cannot answer that question plainly is telling you something about how the rest of the specification is handled.
What to Keep With the Import File
- The commercial invoice, the packing list and the batch test reports, filed against the order number.
- A copy of the HS classification, with your broker’s written opinion.
- Batch date-code photographs taken before loading, so a later field query can be traced to a run.
- The sample approval record — which unit, which revision, which date.
A field question eighteen months after the invoice is answered by the documentation you kept at the time. Keep it with the order, not in a supplier’s folder.
