Keyfob vs Handheld Remote: Which Format to Stock for Each Customer Type

Format Follows the Use, Not the Price

Dealers routinely ask which format to stock. The answer depends on where the remote lives, and it is worth separating two customer types that look similar on a spreadsheet but behave completely differently.

Handheld: the Van and the Wall

A handheld remote is a working tool. It lives in a glovebox, a toolbox, or on a wall next to the door. Its advantages are that it is easy to find, has large buttons that work with gloves on, and does not need to be recharged or paired to a phone. Its disadvantages are size and the fact that it gets lost in a coat pocket more often than a keyfob does.

For an installer carrying stock in a van, the handheld is the volume format. For an end customer, the keyfob is usually what they want.

Keyfob: the Keyring

A keyfob format is what the customer expects, because it goes on their keyring next to the car keys and the house keys. It is small, it is unobtrusive, and it is what the OEM version looks like. The trade-off is that button feel and housing quality matter much more at that size — a stiff button pad in a keyfob is noticed immediately, where the same defect in a handheld is not.

At keyfob scale, fit and button feel decide the returns. A handheld can hide a mediocre housing; a keyfob cannot.

What to Stock

  • Handheld, 1-4 channels — installer van stock, wall-mounted positions.
  • Keyfob, 1-4 channels — end-customer replacement, the highest turn format.
  • Both, in the same rolling-code implementation, so a dealer can cover either request from the same code system without learning two protocols.
