Two Different Businesses Sharing a Van
A garage-door dealer is usually running two businesses at once. One is repair: a customer calls because a remote stopped working, and the dealer needs a handset today. The other is new build: a contractor has a garage to commission and needs a set of remotes plus the programming kit.
These two have different demand patterns, different price sensitivity, and different failure costs — and they should not share a stock policy.

Comparing the Two
| Parameter | Wholesale to a dealer | Dropship from the factory | Direct import |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who buys from you | Another dealer or a retailer | The end customer | The end customer |
| Margin layer | One | Two | Two, but you own the import |
| Stock you carry | Yes | Usually none | Yes |
| You handle | Stock, credit, delivery | Nothing — the supplier ships direct | Freight, clearance, classification, compliance |
| Customer relationship | With the dealer | With the supplier | With you |
| Best at | Volume, steady reorder | Low volume, no stock risk | High volume, steady demand |
Why the Split Matters for Purchasing
Repair demand is fast, unpredictable and brand-specific. It rewards breadth: the dealer needs a handset for the door in front of them, and it might be a model they have not sold in a year. New-build demand is planned, quoted in advance and brand-specific, and it rewards depth on the models actually specified in the area.
Purchasing accordingly means two different SKU lists and two different depth profiles. A dealer buying one blended list will over-stock for new build and under-stock for repair, which is the worst of both.
How Repair and New Build Differ in Specification
- Repair — the code system matters more than the band, because the existing receiver decides. A dealer needs handsets covering several rolling-code families in the local band, plus a cloner for the fixed-code remainder.
- New build — the band and the receiver brand are both known at quotation time, so a single model can be specified, and the same model can be ordered for the next project.
Repair stock buys breadth of code system. New-build stock buys depth on a known model. Two lists, two policies, one van.
