The Symptom That Suggests a Coil Problem
A contactor whose main contacts are pitted, whose mechanism is stiff, or whose aux blocks are cracked has failed. A contactor that pulls in weakly, hums, or drops out on a healthy power supply usually has a coil problem — and a coil problem is a very different purchase decision from a full replacement.

Symptom Diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Pulls in weakly, audible hum | Coil under-voltage or failing | Coil replacement if the unit is otherwise sound |
| Drops out on a healthy supply | Coil, or AC coil drop-out behaviour | Check supply under load before replacing |
| Main contacts pitted or welded | Contactor has failed mechanically | Full replacement, not a coil |
| Stiff mechanism, aux block cracked | Physical damage or age | Full replacement |
| Works but warm to the touch | Overload or undersized frame | Re-check the sizing, not the part |
Why the Coil-Only Order Is Commercially Interesting
A coil-only replacement is a smaller part at a lower price, which sounds like a straightforward win. It is also where most mismatches happen, because the coil must match the frame, the voltage and the frequency. A coil that fits the frame but has the wrong voltage will fit mechanically and fail in service.
Three things must line up before a coil-only order is safe:
- Frame. The coil is frame-specific; it is not interchangeable across frame sizes.
- Voltage and type. 24VDC and 24VAC are not the same part. 230V 50Hz and 240V 60Hz are frequently separate references.
- Frequency, where applicable. Dual-frequency coils exist but are not the default.
When a Full Replacement Is the Better Answer
If the contactor has been in service for years, the contacts are worn and the mechanism is worn with them. A new coil in an old contactor produces a unit that pulls in correctly and fails on its next switching operation. The honest rule is: if the failure was sudden, consider the coil; if the unit is old and has been switching regularly, replace the whole contactor.

Compatibility and IP Position
Eaton and DILM are trademarks of Eaton Corporation plc. Our compatible contactors are independently engineered replacements using our own design and our own tooling, matched to the published frame size, current rating, terminal layout and coil options of the DILM family. We are not an authorised Eaton distributor, we do not apply Eaton branding to our goods, and no Eaton trademark or patent is reproduced on our product. Where a project specification requires an authorised-channel part, that part must come from Eaton.
